Alfa National Rally Update From The Wagonmaster

I thought I should give you an update on what has been going on over the past
month as we prepare for the 2012 AOC Annual Rally.

The Craft Classes Committee has identified six craft classes that will be given during the Rally: Oreo Cookie Magnet, Votive Candle, Picture Frame, Cathedral Window Ornament, Sun Wind Chime, and Lighted Potpourri Jar.

The Seminars and Vendors Committee has six seminars set up: Vonis Spencer on the Alfa Electrical Charging System, Alfateers Q&A with Jon and Martin, Ed Burrows for Tech Talk, Diane Czarnowski for a microwave/convection oven class, Kirk Ault from Tolleson, AZ Freightliner on the Freightliner chassis, and Gold Prospecting for RVers with Jean and Will Bass and Dan Gentry.

In addition to the Alfateers, they also have lined up Joe Colvin for glass repair (fogged window repair), Diane Czarnowski with microwave cookbooks and DVDs, and Andy the Pin Striper.

The Off-Site Activities Committee has identified a dinner theater in the area for us to attend.

The Wine and Cheese Committee are preparing to host a wine and cheese social hour by the pool.

The Food, and Coffee and Donuts Committees have begun coordinating with the Resort's Catering Service to serve three dinners, the ladies' luncheon, the ice cream social, and the morning coffee and donuts.

The Golf Tournament Committee has selected the Mountain Brook Golf Course, across highway 60 from the RV Resort, as the site of the golf tournament.

The Raffle and Door Prizes Committee is out buying an assortment of door prizes that will be given away at each of the three dinners, the ice cream social, and raffle prizes that will be given away at the farewell dinner. As is our tradition, each AOC Chapter has been asked to present a gift basket to be given away at the farewell dinner.

Jon Goldstein has confirmed that Alfateers will host a "burgers and brats" cookout, will have a team of technicians at the Rally (provided enough attendees sign up for service and/or installa
tions), and will donate a very nice upgrade for your rig as a raffle prize.

If you have not registered for the Rally, I encourage you to do so. Registration forms are available on this Group's site in the files area or you can download them from http://www.alfasouthloafers.com. We are receiving registrations daily. So don't be left out.

This is your chance to meet and greet Martin, Vonis, Ed, Kirk, and ask your technical questions face-to-face. Vonis tells me that he will have his volt meter with him J

Battery use in GPS & other electronics powered by 12V plug ins

I recently had my GPS go out of commission and opened the back to see if the batteries were still good. (it takes 6 AA penlite batteries for back up) Once I got the back off, I found the batteries were corroded beyond belief and the white acidic powder was corroding the springs and terminals. Since the batteries carry a note on the pack that the manufacturer will repair or replace electronics damaged by leakage, I called to get directions. I think they will stand behind the guarantee, but the person did tell me that many electronics that have dual power sources actually try and recharge the batteries when the unit is plugged into 12V. The standard battery is not designed to be recharged and this corrosion is typical of standard batterys that have seen recharging cycles. Next step is to call Garmin and see why their literature does not describe this issue.

Auxiliary brake system for your towed vehicle

If you are considering a new auxiliary braking system for your towed vehicle, let me suggest you look at the RVi brake.  I purchased one at the Perry show this past spring and I really like it. It is light weight and compact and does not require much power. Mine is running just fine off the power outlet in the rear of my car (have to use an extension cord). Some units draw high amp loads and require a separate outlet hooked directly to the car battery. It is easy to hook up and detach. Look for technical information and details at rvibrake.com.  The unit sells for $1250.00 but the owner of the company has offered the Alfa Sunrisers a price of $995 until the end of the year. If you are going to the Tampa show, the company will have a display and I would guess they will be offering a show special price. Call them at 800-815-2159 for more information and if you decide to order, make sure you ask for the Sunrisers discount.
